Stonehenge in America

Stonehenge, that prehistoric pile of rocks in southern England, has captivated the minds of people the world over. Some Americans have been so taken that they've built their own copies.

Maryhill Stonehenge

This one is in Washington, overlooking the Columbia River Gorge. It is nominally a monument to veterans of the Great War, but I think that was just an excuse to keep people from making fun of it.

It isn't very accurate, but it's the oldest one I've visited, and it's the thought that counts.

Rolla Mini-Stonehenge

This one is a half-scale replica and is on a college campus in Rolla, Missouri. They built it to demonstrate their stone cutting prowess.

The sign said that this replica is perfectly proportioned, and that it can be used to predict the position of the sun.

This is on a college campus, and parking is at a premium. That's why there are two spaces marked "Stonehenge Parking".

Carhenge

Carhenge is probably the most famous Stonehenge replica in the U.S. It is claimed to be an exact copy, except it is made from cars from Detroit instead of rocks from Wales.

It is located just north of Alliance, Nebraska. You can't miss it.

Real Stonehenge

Yes, I've been to the real Stonehenge, but they charge admission and won't let you get close and touch it. There are too many tourists, and it's a long way from here.
